Remember that missed lunch I mentioned in my last post? The one that I missed because of a sick kid? Well, I made up for it today. This is the kind of liquid lunch I love!

I only have a photo of the final result, because, well…I was enjoying myself so much that I forgot to get the camera out and take pics. You know how that goes. Don’t pretend you wouldn’t have done the same thing!

Why was it so indulgent? Black cherry chutney! Oh yeah. Sounds delicious, doesn’t it?

It might not look so yummy here, but trust me, it’s a gorgeous, I-just-want-to-bathe-myself-in-it way. Not that The Doc would appreciate it if I were purple. It’s OPI‘s deep red-purple with a subtle sparkle to it. Go check it out. I love their colors and the names are divine!

Of course, liquid polish is only the end result of the “liquid lunch.” The part that I missed (remember…the part where I was so distracted to get out the camera) was the warm, bubbly swirling water in the foot soak. Oh, and the foot and leg massage. Ahhhh, yes. Add the massaging chair and good company of a friend. It doesn’t get better than that.

If I could enjoy that every day, I might actually remember to stop and have lunch.

The other day I received the phone call I dread getting from daycare. “One of the boys is sick and you must come pick him up.” I dread the call because time is precious on school days. You know what I mean…you can run into a store without dragging two kids along who don’t want to ride in the cart, do want to ride in the cart, don’t want to and want to “help” get things, dash off in different directions, etc. You can also get a lot accomplished around the house, whether it’s making a blog post, clean, spend time on client calls (if you work from home like I do), and overall just enjoy the peace and quiet.

Just as I was heading out the door to meet a friend for lunch, I get the word that Little A has a fever and isn’t well. A quick email to reschedule lunch and I was out the door. It was right about nap time for the boys and Little A’s teachers said he had been asking to go to sleep for an hour. That was their first clue that he was sick. I only had to look at his eyes when I walked in the door. The eyes tell all, especially with kids.
Little A sick eyes
Look at those eyes! A mommy’s heart absolutely breaks when faced with such sad, tired, I-don’t-want-to-even-move eyes. So we didn’t move the rest of the day. Little A was exhausted but had the bad, restless fevered sleep that meant I had to sit with him to rub his back and settle him down all afternoon. He slept for more than four hours, though, and I had to wake him up to trudge back up to school to fetch Big A.

This is how the evening went with Big A. He seems perfectly healthy.

Lots of fruit juice, warm chocolate milk, extra naps (yes, with me because of the restless issue again), peanut butter waffles for both breakfast and supper, and 36 hours later we had two perky, mostly-germ-free wee beasts again. Little A was feeling so much better than he asked The Doc to “fin” him before bedtime. Big A had to join in the fun, too. I flipped on the Olympics and watched the ice skating ladies jump and spin much more gracefully than the boys in the playroom were doing. After each round, they all collapsed into a dizzy pile on the floor. Good thing we have carpet instead of ice.

Every Saturday morning I plan out the family’s weekly menu. I forced myself to get into this habit about 2 years ago, right after Little A was born. Before then, I was the type to go to the store, see what looked interesting, and bring a few things home. This always left me with one or two ingredients short of what I needed, requiring extra trips to the store during the week, or on the flip side, food that didn’t get eaten and was thrown away (meaning money was thrown away). With 2 wee beasts to drag around me with, I realized I didn’t want to make those extra trips and started to get my life organized.

This week looks to be especially hectic, with me trying to arrange financing for a new business, a couple of after-daycare events, and a birthday party. Luckily, my new issue of EveryDay with Rachel Ray magazine just arrived, so it’s all 30-minute meals this week! I generally try to get recipes from a number of sources for variety, but I think this week’s plan will still provide enough of a taste adventure to keep everyone from being bored.

  1. Chutney Chicken One-Pot with a side of Indian Creamed Spinach (my own creation)
  2. Taco Pasta Toss with Corn Relish on the side
  3. Spiced Roast Chicken with Onions, Lentils and Couscous with salad
  4. Thai Chicken Salad Bites (turned into wraps by using cellophane rice paper)

Four recipes usually get us through the week with left-overs for the other days or something like scrambled eggs, pancakes and bacon for a breakfast-supper one day.
This menu gives us some global tastes and ensures the boys have a good variety of foods to try that include a ton of nutrition.

At the end of the week, I’ll let you know how the family rated each dish.

If you create similar menus or have recipes you’d like to share, I would be excited to hear your ideas.
